Why do I need a USI?

What is a USI? Find out here

From 1 January 2015, if you are a new or continuing student undertaking nationally recognised training delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), you will need to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). A USI is made up of ten (10) numbers and letters that is free, easy to create and stays with you for life.

What is the advantage of having a USI?

The USI will give you access to an online record of your nationally recognised training the form of a USI Transcript. This can be used when applying for a job, seeking a Credit Transfer or demonstrating pre-requisites when undertaking further training.

How to get a USI

It is free and very easy to create your own USI online. It should take less than 5 minutes to complete.

Need help?

ASTRA can help you by either creating a USI for you (if you don’t already have one) by completing our USI Creation Form or with your written permission we can search for your USI. This will be organised at the time of enrolment with you.

What if I don’t have access to my documents?

The Office of the Student Identifiers Registrar (OSIR) understands some students genuinely may not have access to standard verifiable identity documents and for this reason, we have developed two new evidence of identity forms for the following student cohorts:

  • Indigenous students
  • Incarcerated students

We have an ASTRA Student Study Group on Facebook for all our students.

CSQ

CSQ helps eligible people from the Building & Construction industry to continue to develop their skills and provide access to training for those who are currently under-employed or out of work to build their skills and assist them to increase their employment opportunities or re-enter the building and construction industry sooner.

Certificate 3 Guarantee

The Certificate 3 Guarantee to support eligible individuals to complete their first post-school certificate III qualification and increase their skills to move into employment, re-enter the workforce or advance their career.

User Choice

The User Choice 2017 – 2020 program provides a public funding contribution towards the cost of training and assessment for eligible Queensland apprentices and trainees. The program provides the flexibility for apprentices, trainees and their employes to select a preferred RTO for the delivery of accredited training to meet their specific needs.

BERT Training Fund

The BERT Training Fund (BTF) assists in the training of workers in the building and construction industry who are members of the Building Employees Redundancy Trust (BERT).

Training available under this funding include short courses through to Cert IV and Diplomas.

Course Fees

ASTRA accepts the following payment types:

  • Online via the payment link on your invoice
  • Credit Card (including amex)
  • Direct Deposit
  • openpay (conditions apply)
  • Payment Plan
  • zipPay (conditions apply)
  • Purchase Order
  • Account (for approved customers only)
  • Cash (in the Brendale office only)

All course fees must be paid prior to the end of your course. No certificates will be issued without full payment of fees received.

Due to Regulatory restrictions in place under Clause 7.3: Acceptance of fees in advance, ASTRA must not collect more than $1,500 in pre-paid fees from any student. This means ASTRA will issue you with a secondary invoice after commencement of training to finalise your fees.

Payment Plans

Our payment plans are personalised to suit your needs.

There is 0% interest charged on our payment plans. Meaning, we break the total cost of your course up over a number of weeks. No hidden fees or charges.

Please note certificates cannot be issued without full payment of all fees.

openpay

Sign up through their app, get pre-approval and you are ready to train. You can pay for all or part of your course. You can even pay off one amount and get a secondary amount to pay the balance of your course.

zipPay

Some training courses listed on our website indicate zipPay option. This option allows you to cover all or part of the cost of your course.

Students must firstly get pre-approval from zip prior to commencing a course. Once approved, monthly payments will be required to be paid to zip.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations received 6 working days prior to course commencement are entitled to a refund without penalty.
Cancellations received 5 working days prior to course commencement are entitled to a refund of fees paid minus an administration fee.
Cancellations made after this date are not entitled to a refund, through a substitute candidate may attend.

Refunds are processed by the same method in which they are paid.

Training is charged at $ 1.60 per nominal hour per unit.

Certificate III Business Administration | 13 units = 2 core units + 11 elective units | $ 112.00 + elective units

Certificate III Landscape Construction | 15 units = 11 core units + 4 elective units | $1 264.00 + elective units

RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be defined in a number of ways, however all definitions include the key notion that:
RPL involves the assessment of previously unrecognised skills and knowledge an individual has achieved outside the formal education and training systems.

RPL Assessment can result in a Statement of Attainment/s being awarded for a singular or multiple units of competency or a full Qualification.

Your Experience Matters

What matters in the RPL process is that the knowledge and skills you have gained over time help to meet the learning outcomes and assessment criteria of the unit/s of competency or qualification for which you are seeking RPL.

You are encouraged to apply for RPL if you believe you possess the skills and knowledge identified in the outcomes of a unit of competency or qualification.

Remember, to have skills formally recognised, assessors must make sure you have the skills and knowledge to meet the industry standard.

RPL is an assessment process, just without sitting in a classroom or having to complete full assessments. Instead, you supply evidence showing your experiences and knowledge and our assessors will ensure it meets the training package requirements and be able to sign you off as competent.

Step 1 – RPL Skills Assessment

This is where you send through your employment history and any training you have completed for one of our assessors to determine if RPL is right for you.

Step 2 – Enrolment Process

This is where you complete all the required documents to enrol into your chosen course and provide your enrolment documentation. You will also be sent an invoice for RPL enrolment.

Step 3 – Evidence Portfolio

This is where you will receive your RPL kit and you will need to supply the required evidence for your course. You should submit as much evidence as possible for your assessor to review.

Step 4 – Evidence Review

Your assessor will review all your evidence supplied and map it against the training package rules.

Step 5 – RPL Interview / Additional Evidence Gathering / Gap Training

Your assessor will complete an RPL interview with you and may require some additional evidence from you at this point. If you are unable to produce sufficient evidence, your assessor will discuss gap training activities to complete your course.

Step 6 – Final Review & Issuance

Your assessor will complete all your mapping, marking and ensure you have shown competency in your course. Once you have been found to successfully complete your assessment, you will be issued with either a Statement of Attainment or a full Qualification (depending on the course you have chosen).

Some key points to consider that ASTRA will use to verify what is “quality evidence”

Current
The evidence must demonstrate your competence to date. Evidence should be drawn from workplace examples that are no more than five years old, and include evidence of work completed within the past 12 months.

Valid 
It is relevant to the skills and knowledge being assessed

Sufficient
You must provide enough evidence to demonstrate competency

Authentic
You must be able to prove that the evidence is your own work

We are several delivery options available for students.

If I am completing an online course, how do I contact my trainer?

The Training Team are here to help you every step of the way. We never just “set and forget” online students. You can email your trainer directly through your student portal, or you can call the office and organise a call back from your trainer at a time that suits you both.

Do you offer on-site training?

We can offer training on your site or at our training facility. We have trainers available to travel Australia wide and overseas to help with your training requirements.

How do I know your training is of good quality?

Our courses are written by experienced practitioners, based on industry input and continuously updated.

Our trainers are experienced professionals, with actual real-world experience and knowledge to share.

Our online materials are interactive and easy to follow. Your trainer is available to answer any questions and to speak to you in real-time.

How long does it take to complete a course?

It all depends on how much time you commit to your study and if you have any previous experience and knowledge in the course. Many students complete faster than the official duration and all students should be able to comfortably finish within the official course duration.

What is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO)?

A Registered Training Organisation (RTO) is a training provider registered by ASQA (or a state regulator) to deliver VET services.

RTOs provide quality training and qualifications that are nationally recognised.

What should I look for when choosing a training provider?

The Australian Skills and Qualification Authority (ASQA) has developed a fact sheet to help you to be fully informed about your decision to enrol into a course.

I need help with my computer skills. What do I do?

A member of our Training Team can guide you through your student portal when you call the office, but if you feel like you need more support, there are a wide range of resources available online or at your local library for free.

Brisbane: Visit the Brisbane City Council’s website for more course information on their available courses or Free digital literacy training

One on one help: Visit GetOnlineQld, an initiative from the Qld Government. You find a digital mentor and they help you using your own device

Does my company need a Safety Management System?

Safety Health Management System (SHMS) can be considered as the backbone for organisations. All companies – big or small need a SHMS to be able to manage effectively, efficiently and safely. If you are unsure if your company has a SHMS or an effective, efficient and safe one. We have created SHMS for a wide variety of industries such as Mining and Resources, Schools, Amusement Parks and Government Organisations.

Can ASTRA certify my Management System?

ASTRA can assist with aligning and developing your management system to relevant Standards and Legislation but cannot issue a certification.

Can ASTRA offer Management Systems for a business that is not in the Mining and Infrastructure Industry?

ASTRA can contextualize and develop a vast range of management systems. We have designed SHMS for industries such as Schools, Amusement Parks, Government Services and Warehousing and Factories.
